Karachi: The Sindh government has officially launched double-decker buses in Karachi, marking a significant milestone in the city’s public transport revival. The buses have begun operating on a trial basis from today and will be opened to the general public from tomorrow following routine testing, Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, announced.

Addressing the media, Sharjeel Inam Memon said the introduction of double-decker buses is part of the provincial government’s broader strategy to modernize public transport and provide affordable, comfortable, and efficient travel options to citizens. He stated that the government aims to expand the service citywide by 2026, with the long-term vision of running double-decker buses on every major road in Karachi.

“The Pakistan Peoples Party had promised the people that double-decker buses would be introduced by December 2025, and we have fulfilled that commitment,” Memon said. He added that PPP leadership has issued strict instructions to further improve the Transport Department, emphasizing service delivery and public convenience.

According to the minister, Chief Minister Sindh is personally supervising transport reforms, and the entire provincial team is working diligently to ensure better facilities for the people of Sindh. “Public transport is a basic necessity. The Chief Minister wants maximum facilities to be provided to the people, especially in a megacity like Karachi,” he said.

Sharjeel Inam Memon highlighted that more than 125,000 passengers are currently benefiting daily from the People’s Bus Service in Karachi. In addition, the government plans to facilitate nearly 100,000 passengers through the Orange Line and Green Line bus services, further easing the city’s transport burden.

He expressed optimism that the new double-decker buses would not only enhance commuting capacity but also improve the overall travel experience in Karachi. Concluding his remarks, Sharjeel Inam Memon extended advance New Year greetings to the entire nation, reiterating the Sindh government’s commitment to public welfare and sustainable urban transport development.

The launch of double-decker buses has been widely welcomed by citizens, who see it as a positive step toward addressing Karachi’s long-standing public transport challenges.
